Visby is a city in south-eastern Sweden, located on the Baltic Sea on the island of Gotland. It is one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia, founded by the Vikings, and the centre of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic from the 12th to the 14th century. Visby is probably the best-preserved medieval city in Northern Europe and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The word "Visbis" is derived from the Old Norse words Vis, meaning "place of sacrifice", and bær, meaning "homestead" or "settlement".
