The Dominican Republic ('Dominica') covers two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The island was inhabited by the Taíno tribe when it was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Christopher Columbus established a small fort on the island and named it La Navidad. Dominica has been ruled by the Spanish, occupied by the Americans, and has been ruled by totalitarian governments on several occasions, until finally the first democratic elections were held in 1998. The country has become attractive for tourism.
Dominica is famous for its excellent beaches, which attract kiteboarding and surfing enthusiasts. The resorts of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are particularly famous for their beautiful beaches. The country's capital city has the usual bustle of a big city, and the architecture is steeped in history.
Golden from the sun, bathed by the sea in every shade of blue, green from the pine trees and olive groves, fragrant with orange blossom, fascinatingly unique and full of beautiful surprises - this is Zakynthos. Its qualities have been appreciated by loggerhead turtles, which have chosen the island's beaches for nesting and have become its symbol. The wonderful atmosphere of Zakynthos Island and the warmth of its inhabitants create the ideal conditions for a memorable holiday.
